RSBP looking for a farm contractor for Naddle and Swindale farms

We have been asked by RSPB to publicise this opportunity.

Contract Farming Opportunity

Extensive Sheep farm - Cumbria

On behalf of a retained client we seek Expressions of Interest regarding the position of farm contractor to carry out shepherding and all other agricultural tasks on a c800ha upland holding.  The farm has a high quality and locally renowned flock of 1200 breeding ewes and also has common rights over c.2,000ha involving five hefts.  Maintaining these hefts relies on communal management and co-operation regarding shepherding and gathering.

Two houses will be made available as will two ranges of modern and traditional farm buildings.

Much of the terrain is mountainous, some of which cannot be reached by ATVs.  This is ‘dog and stick’ farming so you will have experience of upland flock management and be a skilled sheepdog handler, with your own trained dogs.

It would be great if you have experience of working in the Lake District or on common land.

This is an exciting, demanding and high profile role for an enthusiastic individual (or family) seeking a new challenge.  High animal welfare and health and safety standards are essential and an acceptance that long working hours are an integral part of farming.

The successful applicant will be in post by 1st October 2015 for a handover period before the current farm contractor leaves post on 31st October 2015.

We are seeking Expressions of Interest from potential applicants.  If you are interested, you will need to submit an Expression of Interest form to register to attend one of the Viewing Days (on 4th & 5th June 2015).  For further information, or to request an Expression of Interest form, please contact oliver.bateman@carterjonas.co.uk or call (01539) 814906.

Following the inspection of the farms, a formal tender for the work will need to be submitted by 25th June 2015 followed by an interview of shortlisted applicants on 3rd July.
