Know more or eat less

Professor Sir John Marsh gave the National Agricultural Lecture at the RASE’s President’s Seminar in London on 28th February, 2012. His lecture starts with a brief reminder of the extraordinary increase in agricultural productivity that
has taken place in the past half-century. That appears to provide good reason to be optimistic about the future. He then outlines the multiple reasons for current anxieties. Finally, he argues that to enjoy a secure, sufficient and sustainable food supply, the global community must encourage scientific discovery and make careful use of existing and new technologies throughout the
food chain; from the farm to the fork.
